The Awards Ceremony honors the achievements of IEEE and IEEE Communications Society members with a myriad of paper awards for their various contributions to the society. The Society’s major paper awards recognize outstanding and original papers published in IEEE ComSoc journals and magazines, which essentially enlarge the field of communications engineering; for example, open new lines of research, envision bold approaches to communication and formulate new problems to solve. Speaker: John Chapman
Abstract: What decisions would you make if you knew what was going to happen next? Some feel they can predict the stock market or the weather based on patterns. It may also be possible to do this for broadband speeds. This talk will look at 10 trends over the last 40 years that determine the speed of the Internet. These will be distilled into the Three Laws of Broadband, which can then be used to predict what will happen over the next 20 years. The results are surprising.
Bio: John Chapman has 40 years of experience designing and delivering broadband solutions. Based upon observation and trends, John has derived his Three Laws of Broadband which then can be used to predict the Future of Broadband. These will be presented at the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) this June in Denver.
John is a senior executive with decades of experience of leadership, strategy, innovation, and execution. With over 130 patents and 50 published papers, John is a prolific inventor, a primary author of DOCSIS, and the inventor of Remote PHY, the new HFC architecture.
John co-founded the Cable Business at Cisco, built the industry's first CMTS, and served as the CTO Broadband and Fellow. John was inducted into the Cable TV Pioneer society in 2015 and into the SCTE Hall of Fame in 2012. CableFax included John in the 2021 and 2022 Top 100 Power Players list.
